“A poem describing a young second-gen immigrant girl’s feelings towards Canadian institutions.”
Happiness is resistance.
Art is resistance.
Resisted the urge to hide.
Mistake.
Kids get to make mistakes.
Never got to be “just a kid.”
Regressed state during traumatic situations.
Need to be an adult.
Need to be taken seriously.
Still never am.
Nerfed in society.
“Go back to your country!”
What if I want it to be better when I do…?
Upbringing.
Troubled childhood.
Pipeline.
Cycle.
Perpetuate.
Kids at school can’t spell “perpetuate.”
In Canada.
School system here, so much more relaxed.
Relax.
Get to relax.
Peaceful land.
But behind closed doors…
Every Child Matters.
More About This Submission
“I chose the poem because I shared it (as well as many others) with two workers from Never Too Late and my Peel Children’s Aid caseworker after a meeting to discuss my mistreatment at a hospital in the city I live in, where one of my closest friends was born. They replied, and said I should submit it to this library.”
