Lived Experts as Professionals: Some Insights from a Former Foster Youth

Primary Audience: Service Providers & Lived Experts

Amanda Rose is a former youth in care, former child protection worker, policy advisor, researcher, and PhD student in Social Work at York University. Drawing on her experience working at two Ontario children’s aid societies and OACAS between 2006 and 2013 and 12 years in child welfare policy and operations at the Ontario Government, Amanda explores what it means to return to the system as a professional after leaving care. Through candid reflection, humour, and interactive discussion, she considers what draws people from care into child welfare, the strengths and challenges they may bring, and how caregivers and colleagues and systems can recognize their expertise and support their value and belonging.
