Turning Survival Mode Into a Success Mindset: How Lived Experts Can Use Survival Skills to Accelerate Their Careers

Primary Audience: Service Providers & Lived Experts

Young people involved in the child welfare system often develop extraordinary skills to navigate instability, adversity, and uncertainty. While these abilities are frequently misunderstood as "survival mode" in response to their circumstances, or coping mechanisms to be corrected, they can also represent powerful professional assets when recognized, supported, and intentionally developed. This interactive workshop challenges service providers to reframe their perspective of survival skills, explore how these strengths can translate into career competencies, and learn how to help young people leverage their lived expertise to pursue fulfilling careers, advance in leadership, and build long-term success. Ultimately, this workshop invites service providers to move beyond a deficit-based approach and engage with young people, not simply as survivors of their circumstances, but as emerging leaders with valuable skills, untapped potential, and the capacity to shape their own success and the future success of our country and our world!
